Cognitive Assessments

A comprehensive learning assessment, also known as a cognitive assessment, plays a vital role in understanding your child’s cognitive functions. It can be conducted independently or as part of a diagnostic evaluation like ADHD or Autism.

Through a learning assessment, our experts gain insight into your child’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses, which is crucial in determining their needs and offering recommendations for both school and home environments.

With Cognitive Assessment, you gain an understanding of yours or your child’s learning and developmental needs

What to expect from Cognitive Assessments

Initially, information will be gathered from parents, carers, and possibly the child’s school to obtain a comprehensive developmental history.

The assessment will be carried out with the child, lasting up to  2 hours. The number of appointments needed (1 or 2) to complete the assessment will be based on the child’s age and ability to concentrate.

Following the assessment, the results will be documented, and you will receive a detailed report outlining the findings and providing any recommendations for home and school. A feedback session can be arranged to go over these results and ensure complete understanding.

Why Cognitive Assessments might be right for you

Understanding a child’s learning style is essential for creating a smoother and less stressful environment both at home and in school, as noted by many parents and teachers.

Children often exhibit “spiky” profiles, excelling in some areas while performing at an average or below-average level in others.

They compensate for their weaknesses with their notable strengths in different areas. However, challenges arise in situations where they can’t overcome their difficulties, leading to emerging problems.

Understanding a child’s thinking process and how they absorb information is crucial for planning their improvement and adapting the environment to their needs.

Knowledge of a child’s memory capacity, processing speed, and verbal comprehension benefits them in both home and school settings. This understanding allows for tailored learning methods and improved ability to follow instructions.

Who can benefit from Cognitive Assessment

A cognitive assessment is for a child in the age range of 5 -16.

It can help support those that are struggling at school or have for those that are wanting to access specialist provisions for giftedness or differences.

No referral is needed for a cognitive assessment.
