A clearer understanding. Practical support. A way forward.

You may be asking yourself:

  • Why are everyday situations becoming so difficult?
  • Why is my child becoming overwhelmed, anxious or distressed?
  • Why are strategies that used to work no longer helping?
  • Could sensory, communication or executive-function needs be contributing?
  • Is school, college or another environment making things harder?
  • Could my child be neurodivergent?
  • What can I actually do differently at home?
  • What support should we consider next?

You don’t need to have all the answers before seeking support.

The consultation gives you dedicated time with a specialist to explore the bigger picture, understand your child’s needs through a neuroaffirming lens, and identify practical ways forward.

Who is this consultation for?

Understanding Your Child is designed for parents and carers who want a clearer understanding of their child or young person’s needs and practical guidance about how best to support them.

It may be particularly helpful if:

  • Everyday situations are becoming increasingly difficult or overwhelming
  • Your child is experiencing anxiety, emotional distress, shutdowns or periods of dysregulation
  • There are concerns about school attendance, transitions or coping within education
  • Sensory, communication, executive-function or demand-related needs may be contributing to difficulties
  • Strategies that previously helped are no longer working
  • You are unsure which support or professional involvement may be appropriate
  • You are waiting for an assessment and want support in the meantime
  • You think your child may be neurodivergent but they have not yet been assessed
  • Your child already has a diagnosis but you need practical support with what happens day to day

Your child does not need a formal diagnosis

The consultation can be helpful whether your child or young person:

  • Has a confirmed diagnosis
  • Is waiting for an assessment
  • Is beginning to explore whether they may be neurodivergent

The focus is on understanding their individual needs and identifying practical support, rather than on giving them a label.

What will you get from the consultation?

Understand what may be happening

We’ll look beyond individual behaviours or difficulties to consider what may be contributing to them.

This can include sensory needs, communication, emotional regulation, executive functioning, demands, environment and sources of overwhelm.

Make sense of the bigger picture

We’ll consider your child’s strengths, interests, existing support and the situations that are proving difficult.

The aim is to build a clearer picture of why things may be happening, rather than simply providing a list of generic strategies.

Practical support

You’ll receive practical recommendations that are tailored to your child’s needs and your family’s circumstances.

These may include strategies for home, education, employment or other relevant settings.

Know what to do next

Where appropriate, your support plan will identify useful next steps and signpost you towards relevant services or further support.

How it works

Tell us what’s happening

Get in touch and tell us a little about your child or young person and what support you are looking for.

We’ll first check whether Understanding Your Child is appropriate for your family, whether we have availability and whether we can meet any relevant timescale.

Complete the questionnaire

If the service is suitable, we’ll send you a pre-consultation questionnaire.

You’ll also have the opportunity to provide up to two relevant documents for review, with a maximum of 40 pages in total.

Talk it through

You’ll have a 90-minute online consultation with a specialist.

The appointment is primarily for parents or carers, so your child or young person does not need to attend.

Older teenagers and young adults may join for some or all of the appointment where appropriate and where they wish to be involved.

Receive your personalised plan

A multi-disciplinary team meeting will be held to discuss the findings and reach a conclusion.

Review the recommendations together

Usually two to four weeks later, you’ll have a 30-minute follow-up appointment.

This gives you an opportunity to discuss what you’ve tried, ask questions and make any necessary adjustments to the recommendations.

Why choose Equally Different Therapy?

At Equally Different Therapy, we specialise in neuroaffirming support for neurodivergent children, young people and families.

We recognise that difficulties such as anxiety, overwhelm, school avoidance, emotional dysregulation, sensory needs and demand-related distress rarely have a simple, one-size-fits-all explanation.

We look beyond behaviour

Rather than focusing only on what your child is doing, we consider what may be happening underneath it.

We look at the individual child or young person, including their:

  • Strengths and interests
  • Communication style
  • Sensory needs
  • Emotional needs
  • Environment
  • Relationships
  • Demands they are experiencing
  • Existing sources of support

Practical rather than generic

You don’t need another list of strategies that may or may not work.

The purpose of this consultation is to help you understand the whole picture and identify practical, realistic recommendations that are specific to your child and your family.

Questions you may have

Important information

Understanding Your Child provides specialist consultation, practical recommendations and an individualised support plan.

These services are not the same as:

  • A formal diagnosis
  • Emergency or crisis support
  • Legal advice
  • Formal advocacy
  • An expert-witness opinion
  • A substitute for assessment or intervention by education, health or social-care services

Recommendations are based on the information available at the time of the consultation. We cannot guarantee that the support plan will result in a particular assessment, service, educational provision or other outcome.

For young adults aged 18 or over, consent will normally be required before personal information about them is reviewed or discussed. We will also consider the child or young person’s views, understanding and right to be involved wherever appropriate.

Tell us a little about your child or young person and what you would most like help with.

We’ll review your enquiry first to make sure the consultation is appropriate for your family and discuss availability before an appointment is offered.
