Understanding Your Child

Neurodivergent Parent Consultation and Support Plan

Sometimes it can be difficult to know what your child needs, why everyday situations are becoming so hard, or which strategies are likely to help. This consultation gives parents and carers dedicated time to explore what is happening, understand their child or young person through a neuroaffirming lens, and leave with a clear, practical support plan.

The service is suitable for parents and carers of children and young people aged 4–25, whether they have a confirmed diagnosis, are waiting for an assessment, or are beginning to explore whether their child may be neurodivergent.

Who is this consultation for?

This consultation is designed for parents and carers who would like a clearer understanding of their child or young person’s needs and practical guidance about how best to support them.

It may be particularly helpful where:

  • Everyday situations are becoming increasingly difficult or overwhelming
  • Your child is experiencing anxiety, emotional distress, shutdowns or periods of dysregulation
  • There are concerns about school attendance, transitions or coping within education
  • Sensory, communication, executive-function or demand-related needs may be contributing to difficulties
  • Strategies that previously helped are no longer working
  • You feel unsure about which support or professional involvement may be appropriate
  • Your child has a diagnosis, is waiting for assessment, or may be neurodivergent but has not yet been assessed

What will the support plan cover?

  • Possible reasons why particular situations may be difficult
  • Relevant sensory, emotional, communication and executive-function needs

  • Recommended next steps and appropriate signposting

How does the consultation work?

Before the appointment, you will complete a detailed questionnaire and may provide up to two relevant documents for review, with a maximum of 40 pages in total. This helps us understand your concerns, your child or young person’s strengths and needs, and what support has already been tried.

The 90-minute consultation takes place online and is primarily for parents or carers. Your child or young person does not need to attend. Older teenagers and young adults may join for some or all of the appointment where this is appropriate and they wish to be involved.

Following the consultation, you will receive a personalised written support plan within seven working days. A 30-minute follow-up appointment will usually take place two to four weeks later so that we can review progress, answer questions and make any necessary adjustments to the recommendations.

Important information

This service provides specialist consultation, practical recommendations and an individualised support plan. It does not provide a diagnosis, emergency or crisis support, legal advice, formal advocacy, an expert-witness opinion, or a substitute for assessment or intervention by education, health or social-care services.

Where the consultation concerns a young adult aged 18 or over, their consent will normally be required before personal information about them is reviewed or discussed. We will also consider the child or young person’s views, understanding and right to be involved wherever appropriate.

Recommendations are based on the information available at the time of the consultation. We cannot guarantee that the support plan will result in a particular assessment, service, educational provision or other outcome.
